That First Interview

 

Your resume was sharp, you were great on the phone screening and now you have made an appointment for that first interview.  Hire Green believes this is your crucial stage moment and so we want to give you all the preparation tools, recommendations and assistance necessary to have you ready and confident.  No list is comprehensive because each company and hiring manager is different.  However, there are some common factors for every interview.  So we will concentrate on those areas and suggest you do all that you can to collect in-depth knowledge about the company and the people who you will be interviewing with.  You will have to update your resume, your question & answer preparation and your style to suit the individual culture and expectations of the target company.  Let us know your concerns and we will do what it takes to get you ready.

Make an extensive preparation checklist

 

  1. Resume refinement - Retool your resume and cover letter for the target company

  2. Research the company and the job to which you have applied

  3. Write out expected questions list and practice answers out loud.

  4. Questions
  5. Anticipate opinion or hypothetical questions as, "Why do you think you are the right person for the job"?, or "How would you go about performing a particular job function in the new position"?

  6. Make a list of your strengths and weaknesses and practice talking about them

  7. Either make a practice run to the interview site or download directions

  8. Prepare your interview attire based on company culture (always ere on the side of overdressing).

  9. Find out interview format, whether one person or panel and prepare appropriately.

  10. Find out the other positions on your particular work team, so you know how you fit into their process.

  11. Arrive early.  You can always take a short walk, get a cup of coffee or take a moment to go over your preparation.

  12. If you are a smoker, refrain from having a cigarette until after the interview. Many people may find the smell of cigarette smoke offensive.
